If youre in the middle of planning your main summer tour, stop whatever youre doing and pencil this into your diaries; the annual World Nettle Eating Championships, which take place on 21 June in the idyllic West Dorset village of Marshwood. Quite patently mad competitors from all over the world gather together to attempt to earn the championship title.
The entrants quite literally bite their way through yards of stinging nettles, across an hour, and the winner is the man or woman who manages the most. The record for the attempt is a whopping 74 feet, set in 2000 (and equalled in 2004)
and strict rules mean no mouth-numbing substances are allowed before the feat
Amazingly, the tournament started 22 years ago after a pub argument in 1986 and now competitors arrive from as far afield as Australia. As well as the competition, the event also provides a chance for visitors to learn about this overlooked plants gastronomical benefits.
