As I only tow my caravan on the road about six times a year, I think it's outrageous that I have to insure it for a whole year's road use, when it sits minding its own business in the garden mostly. I'd love to be able to buy separate caravan insurance, online, just before each trip, in the same way that you buy holiday insurance only for a holiday.

You have just made me worry about the position I'm in when I lend my caravan to friends and relatives. Are they covered by my insurance if they are using a different car to tow the van? I think that in general the insurance businesses will use any excuse not to pay out when things go wrong. Buying separate insurance just for the van would certainly simplify the situation!

Not covered by breakdown insurance, just because you're towing something? Call me optimistic, but I think all the basic car recovery and breakdown insurance schemes should include anything you have attached to your car as well as the basic car itself. We pay enough in premiums, after all, and most of us claim very rarely, so they should look after us properly when we come a cropper!

As a new caravanner I live in horror of breaking down, entirely blocking busy roads and having no way of sorting the situation out. For me, the more insurance I can buy against this nightmare the better! Seriously though, the caravanning organisations have got it all sorted. Combined car and caravan deals are tailor-made for us. Why mess around trying to buy separate deals?

A few years ago I decided to give up the breakdown insurance completely. I'd been in a few situations where little things had gone awry with the van, and being a practical sort of bloke, I realised that caravans aren't all that difficult to fix. Why pay for something when you can do yourself, on the spot, with no waiting around?

No, but I do not mind paying a little extra to cover my caravan with the RAC, AA Greenflag etc as long as they will cover caravans at 26ft
